The Wey & Arun Canal - from the Wey to Pallingham

Southland and Devils Hole
The canal descends through two more locks that takes it past Devils Hole.Beyond is the new lock and section of canal at Loxwood

Trees in the old winding hole at Gennets Furze, about a third of the way between Gennets and Southland Locks
The towpath runs along the side of Southland Cottage (whose fence can be seen in the picture.) A milepost stands here. Its the only one that is found next to a dry and overgrown section of canal. All the others are next to restored and watered lengths of canal. Immediately beyond is the head of Southland Lock

Southland Lock (no 7) has heel posts that mark the tail of the lock

The canal in water below Southland Lock
About half way between Southland and Devils Hole locks is what looks like another winding hole. It is thought that this was the site of a wharf

The canal above Devils Hole lock. The white is frost that hasnt melted - its almost midday! These pictures were taken on one of the coldest days of 2008!

Two views of Devils Hole lock. Restored to the original canal dimensions of 68ft x 12ft. The completion and opening of the new Loxwood lock in early 2009 has enabled a focus on the Devils Hole to Southland Lock section. During the second half of 2009 work began on Devils Hole lock (see here) and it is proposed to re-open the lock on April 17th 2010. For a history of the restoration of the lock prior to 2009 see here. Work began on clearing Southland Lock in October 2009

Milepost 12/half to the Wey and 10/half to Pallingham stands below the bridge straddling Devils Hole lock

The canal in deep mid-winter. Its frozen waters are seen here where it crosses the embankment across the top of Devils Hole. The lock is just out of sight

This is a view of Devils Hole from the path that runs towards Loxwood Post Office. Virtually the entire ox-bow lake is visible. The canal's alignment can just be discerned running across the top half of the picture

A view of the canal as it approaches the new lock and bridge at Loxwood. Scene a few months before it became a fully navigable length of waterway

The new lock by Loxwood High Street. It has all mod cons including a full set of ladders and bollards. Its also unsual in that it is built to broadbeam dimensions (72ft x 14ft) rather than the Wey & Arun canal's usual 12ft lock width. Many reports classify it as a new, unamed lock, but according to the Wey South Quarterly Bulletin 144, it is confirmed as being called Loxwood Lock, a name that was espoused as early as 2005. Its gates were fitted in March 2009
